How to choose the right storage unit size
5x5 and 5x10. Locker-to-closet sized. A 5x5 holds a few boxes, seasonal gear, or a dorm's worth of belongings; a 5x10 takes the contents of a studio or a couple of large furniture pieces.
10x10 and 10x15. The most-rented sizes. A 10x10 fits a one to two bedroom apartment; a 10x15 adds room for appliances, a couch, and boxes from a larger apartment or small house.
10x20 and 10x30. Garage-sized. A 10x20 holds a multi-bedroom home or a car; a 10x30 fits a full house move, or a vehicle plus household goods.
5x15, 8x10, 10x25 and 12x30. The in-between sizes, and often the better buy. A 5x15 is a 5x10 with more depth for long items; an 8x10 is a slightly narrower 10x10 and usually cheaper; a 10x25 sits between a 10x20 and a 10x30; a 12x30 is wider than the standard bay, which is what makes it the RV and boat size.
Measure before you book. Most people over-estimate — stacking boxes and taking furniture apart usually lets a smaller unit do the job. Go a size up only if you have large items that cannot be dismantled, like an appliance or a sofa bed.
Common questions
What is the most common storage unit size?
The 10x10 is the most rented size across the US and Canada. It holds the contents of a one to two bedroom apartment and is the usual default when people are unsure.
What size unit fits a car or RV?
A standard car fits a 10x20; larger vehicles, boats, and RVs need dedicated vehicle or RV storage rather than a standard unit. Filter for vehicle storage on any city page.
Do prices change by size and location?
Yes. Larger units and climate-controlled units cost more, and rates vary by city and demand. Open any size above to see city-level pricing pulled from the facilities that publish rates.
