Calgary is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, and demand for self storage has kept pace. Whether you are downsizing, between moves, or need overflow space for a home renovation, knowing roughly what the market charges before you sign saves you money and an afternoon of phone calls.

We list 67 storage facilities in Calgary and hold a published rate for 22 of them. Here is what those show, and where the data runs out.

What a storage unit costs in Alberta

We hold a published rate for 22 of the 67 Calgary facilities we list, which is not enough to break Calgary out by unit size on its own. Nineteen of the twenty Calgary units we hold a 10x10 rate for belong to two branches of one operator, so a Calgary only table would be that company's price list wearing a city's name.

What we can show is the Canadian picture, which rests on enough separate facilities to mean something.

Unit size Median across Canada Middle half of prices Sample
5x5 CA$89 CA$56 to CA$111 92 units at 64 facilities
5x10 CA$115 CA$80 to CA$162 130 units at 101 facilities
10x10 CA$184 CA$111 to CA$259 164 units at 120 facilities
10x15 CA$239 CA$144 to CA$334 132 units at 102 facilities
10x20 CA$249 CA$155 to CA$367 130 units at 109 facilities

For Calgary specifically, the median advertised starting rate across those 22 facilities is CA$67 a month. That is the cheapest unit on each site, usually a 5x5 locker, so treat it as where pricing begins rather than what a family sized unit costs.

Climate control is offered at 25 of the 67 Calgary facilities. In a city that spends weeks below minus twenty it is worth paying for if you are storing anything with wood, electronics, paper or instruments in it, and skippable for tools and plastic bins.

What Drives Calgary Storage Prices?

Location Within the City

Facilities in the downtown core and inner city neighbourhoods like Beltline, Kensington, and Inglewood charge 25 to 40 percent more than suburban locations. Facilities along the outskirts in areas like Balzac, Airdrie, or Chestermere are consistently the most affordable.

Climate Control

Calgary's extreme temperature range (minus 35 in January, plus 35 in July) makes climate controlled storage more valuable here than in most Canadian cities. If you are storing electronics, wooden furniture, musical instruments, or wine, the premium is justified.

Time of Year

May through September is peak moving season. Facilities fill up and rates go up. If you can start your rental in October through March, you will often find better rates and first month free promotions.

Facility Age

Newer facilities with keypad entry, HD cameras, and indoor loading bays charge more. Older facilities with basic security are often 15 to 25 percent cheaper for comparable unit sizes.

How Calgary compares to the rest of Alberta

Facility counts we can state exactly. Rates we mostly cannot, because outside the two big cities almost nobody publishes one.

City Facilities we list Publishing a rate Median starting rate
Calgary 67 22 CA$67 (from 22 facilities)
Edmonton 58 13 CA$70 (from 13 facilities)
Red Deer 12 3 too few published rates to say (3)
Grande Prairie 12 6 too few published rates to say (6)
Medicine Hat 13 3 too few published rates to say (3)
Airdrie 8 2 too few published rates to say (2)
Lethbridge 8 0 no published rates

Lethbridge is the clearest example of the problem. We list 8 facilities there and not one publishes a price, so anyone comparing on cost has to phone all eight. That is normal in smaller Alberta markets, where most operators are single site businesses.

Looking outside Calgary can still be worth it if you do not need frequent access, but check the drive against how often you will actually visit before you commit to it.

How to Find the Cheapest Storage in Calgary

  1. Compare before you call. Use StorageAtlas to see all 67 Calgary facilities in one place, with the published rate shown wherever the operator publishes one and the date we read it. No sales calls.
  2. Look outside the core. Facilities in the NE and SE industrial areas are routinely 20 to 30 percent cheaper than downtown or inner city locations.
  3. Ask about promotions. First month free deals are common, especially during off peak months (October through March). That is effectively an 8 percent discount on a 12 month rental.
  4. Consider drive up vs interior. Drive up units cost 10 to 15 percent less than interior hallway units at most facilities. If you do not need climate control, drive up is the better value.
  5. Watch for admin fees. Some facilities charge a $25 to $50 move in fee. Others waive it entirely. Always ask before signing.

Do I Need Climate Controlled Storage in Calgary?

Calgary's chinook winds can swing temperatures by 20 degrees in a single day. Standard outdoor units in uninsulated buildings will see those temperature swings. Here is a quick guide:

Climate control recommended:

  • Electronics, computers, TVs
  • Wooden or leather furniture
  • Musical instruments
  • Wine or food items
  • Important documents and photos
  • Artwork and antiques

Standard storage is fine for:

  • Metal tools and equipment
  • Seasonal sports gear (skis, bikes)
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Boxes of clothing (in sealed bins)
  • Holiday decorations

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest storage unit in Calgary?

The cheapest storage units in Calgary start around $30 per month for a small 5x5 locker. These are typically unheated exterior units at suburban facilities. For a standard 5x10 unit, expect to pay $50 to $75 per month at budget friendly locations in the NE or SE industrial areas.

How much does a 10x10 storage unit cost in Calgary per month?

A 10x10 storage unit in Calgary costs between a wide range depending on location, climate control and the age of the building. The median 10x10 across Canada is CA$184, counted from 164 units at 120 separate facilities. We hold too few published Calgary rates to give a Calgary specific figure for that size.

Is self storage cheaper in Edmonton or Calgary?

Edmonton is generally 15 to 20 percent cheaper than Calgary for comparable unit sizes. A 10x10 in Edmonton averages $100 to $150 per month compared to $120 to $170 in Calgary. However, if you live in Calgary, the cost of driving to Edmonton to access your unit will quickly offset any savings.
